The Norwegian Wind Ensemble plays Gil Evans
Soloist: Arve Henriksen
Conductor: Maria Schneider
”Hybrid Series”
Improviser extraordinaire and member of internationally acclaimed group Supersilent; Arve Henriksen featured as soloist over Gil Evans´ timeless creation ”Sketches of Spain”. Two-time Grammy winner Maria Schneider conducts Norway´s finest wind orchestra The Norwegian Wind Ensemble. Also features interviews with Maria Schneider from Central Park NY a few months prior to the show, and a unique and spontaneous 100% improvised session from the brand new opera hall downtown Oslo at the end of an otherwise climactic night.
The videosession was shot with 12 camerapositions by Omniproduction, and the sound recorded straight-to-tape without any repairs or overdubs whatsoever. This is a raw session captured in all its natural beauty by a "feinschmecker" soundcrew from Lawo Classics in Oslo. Encoded for your listening pleasure in DTS 5.1, creating a slightly wider stereoimage with lots of depth and headroom on the audial palate.
Henriksen gives a personal rendition of this timeless classic, adding a new layer of beauty to the delicate orchestrations of Evans. Schneider is at her best, holding both soloist and ensemble in a tight clutch while shaping the music effortlessly. The Norwegian Wind Ensemble shows how clasically trained musicians can add a new dimension to Evans extremely demanding score. Enjoy, over and over.
